Taking Insurance at Ancora Wellness: Making Care Accessible

At Ancora Wellness, we know that finding care can be overwhelming. That’s why, in 2023, we decided to start accepting insurance as part of our mission to expand access to care for our Hillsboro, Oregon community. Our goal is to work within the insurance coverage system while staying true to our anti-oppressive, trauma-informed values and offering you care that feels supportive, not clinical or rigid.

Insurance is definitely one of our most common FAQs. We understand that if you have the benefits, you often want to utilize them to access our counseling, naturopathic care, or nutrition services. Here’s a breakdown of how we approach insurance, what it means for you, and how we make it as smooth as possible.

The “Golden Thread” of Your Care

When Ancora is working with insurance, we have to follow what’s called the “golden thread”: connecting your diagnosis, treatment, and progress over time.

  • Diagnosis: This often happens in your first appointment. We take time to get to know you and understand why you’re seeking care. A diagnosis simply gives us a starting point to guide your treatment. It doesn’t mean there’s anything “wrong” with you or that we’re trying to label you. It’s just a tool we use to communicate with insurance and make sure your care is covered.
  • Treatment: Based on your diagnosis and goals, we create a plan tailored to you. This could include therapy, nutritional support, naturopathic care, or a combination of approaches.
  • Discharge (or Ongoing Support): Eventually, the goal is to reach a point where you’ve met your goals, and we can wrap up care—or move into ongoing maintenance if that’s what’s best for you.

What Insurance Plans Do We Accept?

We’re currently in-network with the following providers:

  • Regence BlueCross Blue Shield
  • Providence
  • Pacific Source
  • Aetna
  • Optum/United
  • CareOregon
  • American Specialty Health (nutrition and naturopathic care only)

It’s worth noting that each provider at Ancora Wellness is contracted a little differently, which means your specific coverage may vary. During your initial consultation, it’s a great idea to ask about how your plan applies to the provider you’ll be working with.

Using Out-of-Network Benefits

If your insurance isn’t on our list, don’t worry! Many plans include out-of-network benefits, which allow you to work with providers who aren’t in your network.

Here’s how it works:

  1. After your session, we’ll provide you with a superbill—essentially, an itemized receipt.
  2. You submit the superbill to your insurance company. Depending on your plan, they may reimburse you for a portion of the cost.

Superbills are a helpful way to access care without needing to switch providers or pay entirely out of pocket.

Balancing Insurance with Anti-Oppressive Practices

One thing we’re deeply committed to is offering care that respects your unique experiences and autonomy. While insurance can sometimes feel impersonal, we work hard to keep the focus on you—not just on what insurance requires.

For us, that means:

  • Meeting you where you are and honoring your goals.
  • Avoiding language or practices that feel pathologizing. A diagnosis is just a tool—it doesn’t define who you are.
  • Being transparent about costs, coverage, and options so you can make the best choices for yourself.

We’re Here to Help

We know insurance can feel confusing, and we’re here to make it easier. During your initial consultation, we will verify that we accept your insurance and empower you to reach out to your insurance provider to understand your coverage.

At Ancora Wellness, our goal is to create a space where care feels accessible, supportive, and empowering—whether you’re using insurance, out-of-network benefits, or paying privately.
